About Ambulance Membership

Ambulance Membership: A Tool for Sound Ambulance Finance

Ambulance membership programs serve a variety of good purposes. They provide inexpensive access to an often expensive resource, generate positive affiliative relationships with residents, and provide a healthy margin of funding for otherwise financially strapped systems. Today, the revenue is more important than ever.

A well managed membership program will reimburse the system for 100% of the membership write-off and still pay a large dividend to the ambulance fund. That's a double dose of revenue, since your larger payer experience isn't likely to be anywhere close to 100% collection. If your program doesn't produce results like this, let's find out why not.

Springfield created FireMed in Oregon over 20 years ago. We now have Over 33,500 members in our three-ASA program. There are more than 50 FireMed programs statewide, more in California, and probably many we don't know about. We also manage programs for four other ambulance providers-- and get results. Our program increased Molalla FireMed membership more than 400% in the first year, and more than 50% again the second year.

With our broad experience base, we can help you start a program, improve your existing program, or run your program for you. Our services are free or inexpensive, and available to all ambulance providers, public or private. Do you like to improve how you do things? Would you like earning more money for your ambulance service? A phone call is one of those freebies. 541-744-3375.

Ambulance Membership 101

In our model of ambulance membership, an individual, family, or household is covered for the out-of-pocket cost of ambulance service. You will still collect any insurance payment that is available, so the membership fee can be a modest amount that virtually anyone can afford. The FireMed fee in Eugene/Springfield is $62 per year, per household, for ground ambulance, or $97 per year for ground plus air, in partnership with Life Flight Network.

The service is whatever your system provides: emergency only, emergency and medically necessary non-emergency, air ambulance, etc. The coverage period is usually one year. Some programs have a single expiration date for all memberships, while some expire one year from the joining date. Some programs offer multi-year memberships and lifetime memberships.

In our program the membership fees collected cover all member transports at full payment, and still leave a net revenue to the ambulance fund. This surplus makes possible equipment purchases and training that we otherwise couldn't afford.

But the best results are not financial. A membership program makes residents of your community a part of your EMS system. As members they take pride in the high-quality service that they help you provide. Your membership will become solid supporters in your community.

You also make this high-quality service available to everyone. Anyone who cannot afford a modest annual membership fee is eligible for assistance, and has access to the service through that benefit. Pretty simple. Congratulations on having a membership program. Or call today to ask how to get started.
