Services Provided To The Community
Service Area
The Department provides fire protection and medical first response services to the City of Springfield and three nearby water/fire districts. Total population served is approximately 61,000 people in 18.76 square miles. The Department's ambulance service area consists of about 2,000 square miles (inclusive of the above) with a population of approximately 88,250.

Staffing and Deployment
The Department operates three 24-hour shifts. Personnel are on duty for 24-hours and off duty for 48 hours. Minimum staffing is 21 people per shift, operating from five stations. Frontline fire apparatus deployment includes five companies: three engines (3 people each), one telescoping aerial platform (3 people), one aerial ladder (3 people), and one Battalion Chief. Frontline medic unit deployment includes three paramedic ambulances (2 people each).
All personnel are paid, full-time positions. Ambulances are staffed with multiple role/multiple skill firefighter/paramedics. Engine companies are staffed with firefighters who are also certified emergency medical technicians or paramedics. Personnel assignments vary between medic units and fire apparatus. All fire apparatus provide advanced life support medical first response services and all ambulances provide fire suppression services.
