Wildland/Urban Interface

There are areas in Springfield where forested land and residential development intermingle. For firefighters, this kind of setting brings special challenges should a fire occur.  The Wildland/Urban Interface is a term that firefighters use to describe an area where development and wildland fuels meet with no clearly defined boundary.  There are several neighborhoods in Springfield that meet this definition.  It is our goal in the Springfield Department of Fire and Life Safety to educate the residents in the Wildland/ Urban Interface area of the hazards they face and how to minimize their risk to fire--especially in the dry summer months.  By following the recommendations of the ‘Fire Free’ campaign you can make your home safer from fire.
